Objectives: This work aims to provide an overview of the impact of digital transformation on the beauty industry. In particular, we will discuss the recent trends on how women perceive appearance in relation to health. We will show an example of a recently launched skin care app, which emphasises a holistic approach to beauty. To achieve relevant digital solutions, skin care experts must drive workflows, clinical studies and A.I. development, therefore we have developed tools to empower them to drive digital applications.
Introduction: From cosmetic recommendation to skin cancer detection, skin assessment apps are transforming the dermatology workflow with digital solutions. We will first address market trends and the shift towards healthy looking skin, then demonstrate a recently launched skin care app providing complementary insights on health and skin. To empower skin experts to provide relevant insights, we have developed tools to enable them to build A.I. workflows. We will show how such tools can be used by skin experts.
Materials / method: For the past five years, Philips has been conducting annual Global Beauty Index surveys, learning from 12,000 women in 12 countries. We summarised results from this extensive study that explored the attitudes and perception of women around the globe, to uncover how they define beauty. Analysing these evolving market trends, we developed a skin care app where skin visual analysis and contextual health information are brought together holistically to provide deeper insights to the user. We provide A.I. tools to experts to enrich development of propositions.
Results: The Global Beauty Index reveals that when it comes to beauty technology, 65% of women surveyed are excited about personalised advice and how to keep their hair and skin healthy. Additionally, more than 60% of women are already taking a holistic approach to beauty, connecting health and skin. Mobile beauty apps are playing an increasingly important role in beauty routines, with a majority of women welcoming apps and service platforms that takes personal goals and preferences into consideration. Philips launched a skin care app offering such a holistic approach.
Conclusion: There is a rapid growth of skin care apps in the beauty industry. However, it is not about technology, it is about offering a holistic solution that seamlessly fits in her daily life and routine. With Philips skin care app we look broader than the outside appearance to help women reach better skin care decisions. To provide holistic solutions that extend to personal health aspects, we need to deliver tangible recommendations and tools to improve holistic beauty and health.
