Objectives: A new method based on Oxygen-Ozone gas to prevent infections and biofilm formation in breast augmentation procedures, that are probable causes of capsular contracture (CC), is presented. The attendee of this presentation will be able to master Oxygen-Ozone gas utilization to achieve this goal.
Introduction: The aetiology of Capsular Contraction is multifatorial. Contamination of implant surface is now thought to be one of the causes of CC. Disinfectants and antibiotic irrigation of the implant pocket have been proposed to reduce its contamination. Oxygen-Ozone gas has the capability to sterilize oxidizing bacterial membranes and their contents. We are proposing a new method based on Oxygen-Ozone gas utilization to sterilize the implant pocket at the end of the procedure.
Materials / method: The Ozone does not interact with silicone implants so it will not have negative consequences on the implant. The Oxygen Ozone mixture generator is operated by a microprocessor, which controls and displays the ozone concentrations produced. The oxygen atoms, made so available, join with other oxygen molecules and form triatomic oxygen: ozone. We use 100 cc of gas with 25mcg/cm3 ozone concentration blown into the pocket trough a drainage tube, that is removed at the end of the operation.
Results: Oxygen-Ozone has a proven and well known effect on bacteria due to chemical and physical properties of Oxygen-Ozone gas. The use Oxygen-Ozone gas to sterilize the pocket and the surface of breast implants is completely new and further investigation is needed to prove clinically and with laboratory findings its long term efficacy to prevent capsular contaction.
Conclusion: Ozone-Oxygen gas may be a harmless more reliable way to sterilize the pocket of breast implants in times when antibiotic resistance is a serious issue, and disinfectants are not able to guarantee a complete disinfection. Its use is recommended in breast augmentation when a silicone implant is used.
