Objectives: understanding what could become a complication in augmentation mammaplasty

learning of some tips and links to control and avoid the risks of augmentation mammaplasty by implants

Introduction: Complications of breast augmentation by implants are difficult to treat. Technical refinements which assure reproducible stable and natural results and which control common risks of breast augmentation are presented in this retrospective study.

Materials / method: The study of literature describes as main complications: infection, hematoma, capsular contracture, seroma, malposition and implant rupture. Guidelines for safe technique and satisfying results are described: Aspects to think of concerning the choice of implant form and size, the dissection of the pocket, option of combined mastopexy, lipofilling, the closure techniques, dressing, and postoperative guidelines for the patient are explained.

Results: Analyse of breast skin and quality and specific anatomy is essential to achieve satisfying results. All these general guidelines and surgical procedures are illustrated by clinical cases with description of technical tricks. Respect of these guidelines reduce the risk of complications.

Conclusion: These technical guidelines should serve as safety measures in breast augmentation and enable natural stable results with a diminished complication rate.
