Objectives: To review the data regarding smooth surface breast implants
Introduction: BIA-ALCL continues to pose a problem for plastic surgeons regarding implant selection in the setting of breast augmentation. There remains some confusion as to whether all implants should be considered or just the smooth surface implants. This debate will discuss the risks and benefits of smooth versus textured devices for breast augmentation.
Materials / method: A review of the current literature was performed to identify manuscripts that review the risks and benefits of textured and smooth implants to reduce the risk of BIA-ALCL.
Results: 10 manuscripts were selected for review and the major discussion points were outlined in support of using smooth surface breast implants for breast augmentation.
Conclusion: Smooth surface breast implants are safe and effective and have not been associated with BIA-ALCL when used as a sole device without a history of textured surface devices
