Objectives: The aim of this lecture is to provide the main benefits of using ultrasound in facial basal cell cutaneous carcinoma.
Introduction: Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common skin cancer cancer in human beings which frequently involves the face where the skin is thin and has the risk of affecting deeper layers such as muscles or cartilage.
Materials / method: A review of the literature on the topic is performed, and illustrative cases are selected.
Results: Clinical, ultrasonographic, and histologic correlations, plus the information reported in the literature, demonstrate the benefits of using ultrasound in facial BCC, particularly on the extent, and risk of recurrence (aggressiveness) of the tumor and to detect the involvement of deeper layers.
Conclusion: Ultrasound is a reliable technique to assess the extent of BCC, including the depth, aggressiveness, and involvement of deeper layers.
