Objectives: To present, describe and aware atendees on how the metabolism of carbohydrates can lead to skin changes, and how to prevent and manage those concerns
Introduction: Carbohydrates are one of the main energy sources for humans,. Its inadequate metabolism (dysglicemia) can lead to either hypo or hyperglycemia.
The chronic exposure to hyperglycemia, among other factors, increases the production of Advanced Glycation End Products (AGEs), which could lead to increased risk of non-communicable diseases and aging skin phenotype
Materials / method: With a deep knowledge and background in genetics, metabolism and cosmetic clinical dermatology, the author performed a bibliographic research to show, describe and aware atendees about the skin changes produced by AGEs
Results: Chronic exposure to AGEs can lead to collagen dysfunction, increased UV damage, Oxidative stress and overall decreased skin functions. In the presentation, measures and treatments for AGEs reductions will be showed
Conclusion: External and internal factors, such as chronic hyperglycemia, can lead to AGEs increasement, which could lead to augmented risk of non-communicable diseases and skin aging phototype. Some measures and treatments can be performed to reduce the skin impact of AGEs
