Objectives: To make it clear that it has been possible to create a hyaluronic acid injectable in the skin, a filler, possessing characteristics at least equal to what is already known, but different, without BDDE, with a crosslinking based on the IPN system.
Introduction: Hyaluronic acid is the reference in fillers. There are dozens of hyaluronic acid on the market and they are all crosslinked by BDDE, according to a technique that has existed since 1995.
BDDE is non-absorbable and has known drawbacks. It is classified as mutagen and tumorigen in the MSDS Chemical Book. This risk is related to the quantities injected and these quantities are small. Nevertheless, these quantities of BDDE accumulate over the years.
Having a filler with equivalent or higher characteristics that does not contain this molecule is a very positive and very "green" novelty.
Materials / method: Since 2010, Scientech Swiss has developed a hyaluronic acid whose internal balance, cohesiveness, durability, are enabled by the IPN system (InterPenetrating Network), technology applied to polymers and known for years, but never used in this field.
The other polymer added to hyaluronic acid to allow IPN is PEG. PEG has been used in oral and injectable medicine for many years, with varying chain lengths in children and adults. It is also found in many cosmetics. There are no chemical bonds between PEG and hyaluronic acid. This is the principle of IPN.
Results: The first studies were performed from 2010 to 2012, the official clinical study in 2014, and also CE marking. This product was then marketed in 2015 in small quantities. The use in real conditions confirmed the qualities described in the clinical studies :
Excellent biocompatibility, excellent safety, special elastic performance, high resistance to compression and crushing, great softness to the skin's touch, durability equal to that already known, rheology facilitating injection, no edema phase after injection.
Conclusion: Now, with this product born 9 years ago, we know that we can use as filler a safe product, effective, with a very high level of technical requirements, very convenient to use for the practitioner and more, it is GREEN.
