Objectives: To describe the efficacy and safety profile of the German bovine hyaluronidase (Hylase Dessau)
Introduction: Hyaluronidase has been on the market for a long time but some patients and colleagues are still afraid to use it.
Materials / method: Mostly eminence based. In gerernal I use hyaluronidase (the German product Hylase Dessau 1:150 or 1:1500) twice a week.
Results: Hyaluronidase dissolves injected hyaluronic acid making the hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers the only one with an antidot. Hyaluronidase is used in emergency situations for vascular occlusion, in case of an immunological reaction against an HA and far more to dissolve unwanted depots of HA. In Germany there is only one bovine hyaluronidase on the market which is availaible in two dosages 1:150 (which is fine for most HA overcorrection) and 1:1500 for massive overcorrections, vascular occlusion and immunological reactions against HAs. Hyaluronidase need to be diluted before injection.
Conclusion: Hyaluronidase is the best what could happen to HA fillers – making them the safest fillers around. There is a small risk of allergic reactions which should not be overrated and usually does not pose a challenge for patient and physician.
