Objectives: Topical minoxidil and oral finasteride are the gold standard therapies for AGA and the only two drugs currently that have US Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved indications for the treatment of hair loss.
Introduction: Emerging treatment modalities for hair loss include injectable platelet rich plasma (PRP), low-level laser therapy (LLLT), microneedling and oral nutraceuticals. Several peer reviewed studies have demonstrated the safety and efficacy of these methodologies although no standardized protocols exist to date. Materials / method: Peer-reviewed studies were analyzed for new treatment modalities showing a safe efficacious profile for treating hair loss.
Results: Several new treatment therapies including lasers, PRP and topical/oral cosmeceuticals are showing promising results in treating hair loss in both men and women. Combination approaches using PRP with fractional lasers and/or microneedling can increase the efficacy of these new treatment modalities.
Conclusion: New generation of treatment modalities show promise as therapeutic options for hair loss.
