Objectives: 1. Understand the biological properties of PRP.
2. Select PRP as mono or combination therapy depending on the indication.
3. Use a suitable application method / injection technique.
5. Perform photo documentation / quality control.
Introduction: The concept of body’s own rejuvenation is gaining more and more attention in aesthetic medicine and dermatology. PRP is a body's own substance that can be quickly prepared and applied on an outpatient basis.
Materials / method: Scientific databases (PubMed, Google Scholar) were reviewed for PRP and its application in the skin and scalp.
Results: A general body of evidence has recently emerged demonstarting positive response for PRP treatments for skin rejuvenation and treatment of alopecia. Intradermal injection of PRP alone or in combination with microneeding improves skin texture and thickens the epidermis. Hair regrowth can be induced by a series of PRP injections alone or in conjunction with microneedling or topical Minoxidil. The down time of CO2 laser is effectively reduced by both topical application of PRP and injection of PRP post laser. Melasma can be effectively treated by PRP and PRP plus microneedling.
Conclusion: PRP is a powerful tool for indications that focus on repair and healing (e.g. treatment of alopecia, scars, actinic elastosis, skin rejuvenation, melasma, atopic dermatitis). Regenerative procedures have found their role in daily practice next to the established treatment modalities.
