Minimally invasive, almost “scarless” subperiosteal browlift with helium RF plasma
Objectives: To describe a novel technique of a minimally invasive, minimal scar subperiosteal browlift and describe its efficacy and safety.
Introduction: Introduction. Though progress has been made in developing less invasive surgical techniques for brow lifting, an unmet need remains for a technically straightforward, minimally invasive approach with lower risk of scarring and alopecia. A novel subperiosteal browlift technique is presented, utilizing a closed, no scope technique, with no need for tissue fixation. The subperiosteal application of thermal energy from a helium-based plasma radiofrequency device produces soft tissue coagulation and soft tissue contraction that obviates the need for skin excision and fixation.
Materials / method: Methods. In this single-center, IRB-approved, retrospective study, records for patients who consecutively underwent a brow lift with helium-based plasma RF between March 2021 and September 2023 were reviewed. Demographic, treatment, and safety information were collected. Photographs with > 90 days of follow up underwent blinded review and changes in brow and forehead height were measured by a computer photograph imaging system. Patients also completed a post-operative satisfaction questionnaire about their aesthetic outcome.
Results: Results. Treatment information was collected for 26 patients. Post-treatment photographs were correctly identified in 78% (6/9) of patients by the blinded observers. Mean change in forehead height (lateral brow, medial brow, brow arch and glabella to the hairline) decreased by 4.1 to 4.9 mm. Mean change in brow height (lateral brow, medial brow, and brow arch to to upper eyelid tarsus lash line) increased by 1.5 to 2.1 mm. Overall, 87% (n=13) of patients were satisfied to very satisfied with their results and 73% (n=11) would recommend the treatment to friends and family.
Conclusion: Conclusions. This study indicates that this novel technique for subperiosteal brow lifting using helium-based plasma RF is an effective and safe alternative to traditional subperiosteal endoscopic brow lifting techniques.
