Objectives: Use ultrasound to appraise the anatomy of the temple.
Define the layers of the temple using ultrasound and shape awareness of temple vasculature to decide on the safest treatment approach for dermal filler treatment.
Introduction: The temple is a high risk treatment area. Care should be taken to avoid serious consequences such as vascular events. Using ultrasound, treatment can be modified to ensure safety.
Materials / method: Ultrasonography is used to differentiate between layers of the temple. Temple vessels can be identified and avoided by scanning prior to treatment. The subcutaneous, interfascial and periosteal techniques for temple augmentation are appraised.
Results: Temple layers and vessels have been identified and examples of treatment of interfascial and periosteal techniques are demonstrated.
Conclusion: To ensure improved pre- and intra-procedural safety, ultrasound may be used to visualise structures beneath the skin. Especially in high risk areas such as the temple, this can improve outcomes and predictability of treatment.
Ultrasound allows treatment technique to be informed by the patient's individual anatomy.
