Objectives: 1: Explore nonpharmacologic treatments of acne
2: Treat acne using Photothermal therapy with Light-Absorbing Gold Microparticles
Introduction: The pathophysiology of acne vulgaris depends on active sebaceous glands, implying that selective destruction of sebaceous glands could be an effective treatment. A variety of treatments have been developed to destroy sebaceous glands, including the 1450 nm laser that works on the sebaceous glands, and photodynamic therapy (PDT) with 5-ALA or methyl ALA.
Phototheraml therapy(PTT) is a type of PDT. It is a heat therapy using light-Absorbing microparticles.
Materials / method: We have performed in 5 male and one female acne patients.
Apply Light-Absorbing Gold Microparticles and massage the area for ten minute. Then, use 805 nm diode laser(Advantage, Lutronic, Korea) to treat the face.
Laser parameter is as following: Fluence of 33 J/cm2, pulse duration of 30 milliseconds, 10% overlap passes through the area twice
Results: The number and the level of severtity of acne has decreased in all 6 patients.
There were no other significant side effects except slight heat sensation and pain.
Conclusion: The results show that PTT with Light-Absorbing Gold Microparticles is effective in treating acne. Compared to the traditional way, this treatment is advantageous because it is non-drug therapy and there is no need for 48 hours UV protection. PTT with Light-Absorbing Gold Microparticles can be another new alternative to acne treatment.
