Objectives: Product liability cases may occur in relation to medical devices used in plastic surgery treatment, such as breast implants.

Introduction: Medical devices may fail during its use by or within the patient. In such cases patients do very often approach the device manufacturer and ask for a compensation for damages.

Materials / method: Based on the European legal framework conditions this presentation gives an overview of the risks associated with product liability claims.

Results: Medical device manufacturers should take into consideration the product liability risks associated with their products and provide for adequate insurance coverage.
