Objectives: To explore common treatment practices to see if they hold up to evidence based data.
Introduction: Our understanding of atopic dermatitis continues to evolve, as we better understand the pathogenesis of the disease
Materials / method: Evidence surrounding the of treatment of atopic dermatitis including bathing, maintenance therapy, moisturization and control of atopic itch.
Results: Bathing more frequently with immediate application of moisturizer is better than less frequent bathing.
Maintenance therapy prolongs remission
Early barrier protection does not seem to alter the course of the disease
Atopic itch is not generally relieved with non-sedating antihistamines
Conclusion: As we come to understand the pathogenesis of atopic dermatitis we can improve our treatment approaches to achieve the best outcomes for our patients.
