Objectives: This presentations should help you to understand the benefit of duplex / ultrasound in treating vascular emergencies with fillers
Introduction: Intravascular injections lead to the most serious emergency in the use of injectable fillers, i.e. skin necrosis. Although we do not fully understand how this occlusion of one single artery leads to skin necrosis, it seems logical to inject hyaluronidase in the affected artery in order to unblock the flow of blood.
Materials / method: Once of twice a month our task force for filler complications at Erasmus University Medical Center receives a referral of a case with pending skin necrosis after filler injections. In all these cases we identify the obstructed vessel by means of duplex/ultrasound imaging and inject hyaluronidase in the affected artery.
Results: Intra-arterial injections of the blocked vessel lead to immediate alleviation of symptoms. A limited amount of hyaluronidase suffices.
