Objectives: To analyze the details of complications of cryolipolysis and Radio Frequency (RF) devices for body contouring and share some new findings from the results.
Introduction: Recently, the development of various body contouring devices has been obvious. There are various types of fat reduction treatment using devices, such as cooling equipment, RF, diode laser system, and High Intensity Frequency Ultrasound (HIFU). Among them, we report on the situation of complications related to representative cryolipolysis device for cooling, and RF device for heating.
Materials / method: We investigated the number of treatments performed in our group for one year from March 2022 to the end of February 2023 with cryolipolysis and RF device each, treatment sites tendency, and the number of treatment areas. We conducted a retrospective study on the number, details, and our management to complications.
Results: As of February 26, 2023, our group own 61 cryolipolysis devices in 58 clinics and 16 RF devices in 16 clinics nationwide. In cryolipolysis group, the largest annual number of treatment areas from March 1, 2022, to the February 26, 2023, was abdomen (n = 21,486), followed by upper arms (n = 13,925), inner thigh (n = 9,353). In RF device group, the largest annual number of treatment areas from March 1, 2022, to the February 26, 2023, was abdomen (n = 5,451), followed by upper arms (n = 1,668), waist (n = 1,603). Regarding the details of complication management in each device will be reported.
Conclusion: As the kinds of complications in the two groups are completely different, it is important not only to compare them based on the complication rate simply, but to perform more detailed analyses based on the data from actual complication cases. No matter kind of device, it is important to perform the attachment device correctly for the complication management, however, in the case of RF devices, it is also necessary to check the pain index during the treatment and to understand the sweating condition.
