Objectives: The aim of this presentation is to address the safety concerns of hair dyes, hair relaxers, BKT, shampoos for:
Hair scalp and shaft
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
Children
Ecosystem
FFA
Introduction: The toxicity and carcinogenicity of hair dyes, shampoos, and hair straightening procedures are of concern regarding human health and environmental aspects.
Materials / method: We present a review of the most important publications about the involvement of hair cosmetics and hair procedures in developing mutagenicity, toxicity, skin rashes, and their safety during pregnancy, breastfeeding, and childhood.
Results: The association between personal hair dye use and cancer risk remains debatable.
Hair dyes contain EDCs and are unsafe for children, pregnancy and breastfeeding.
BKT is potentially carcinogenic because it releases vaporized formaldehyde in high concentrations.
Eczematous psoriasiform skin reactions and kidney injuries may develop after the BKT procedure.Sulfate shampoos are harsher for the hair and may irritate the scalp
Sulfate-free shampoos are milder and more prone to cause contact dermatitis (CABP)
Vegan, cruelty-free, organic hair care products are free from ED, biodegradable, and ethic
Conclusion: More studies about toxicology are needed but with ALTERNATIVES to animal testing.
