Objectives: The objectives of this lecture are to review the pathophysiology and diagnosis of melasma. I will discuss the melanin biosynthetic and melanosome distribution pathways, the risk factors for melasma, and clinical features of melasma. I will also discuss different modalities to diagnose and monitor melasma including clinical examination, wood's lamp examination, and confocal microscopy.

1. Recognize the various skin conditions that can cause facial hyperpigmentation
2. Formulate an approach to their management and treatment

Introduction: Disorders of hyperpigmentation can be vexing for both the patient and the clinician. There are many acquired disorders, other than melasma, that can cause hyperpigmentation of the face. Diagnostic accuracy is essential for optimal outcomes.
